Have Questions?

What is TMS Therapy?

TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) is a safe and highly effective treatment for patients with major depression, anxious depression, OCD, and adolescent depression who aren’t satisfied with the results of conventional psychiatry and pharmacology.

TMS is designed to precisely stimulate neuroplasticity and help the brain form new healthy connections. Patients with MDD, OCD, and other mental health issues typically experience depressed activity in certain areas of their brains. TMS therapy aims to safely stimulate these areas to improve activity with the use of electromagnetic waves similar to an MRI.

Many patients experience significant benefits from TMS. Two in three patients reported a remission of their depression at the end of TMS therapy. Significant cost savings may also be expected with TMS compared to conventional drug treatments. TMS is much less invasive than deep brain stimulation, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and other alternative treatment options for depression. There are continuous independent studies proving that TMS treatment can relieve not only the symptoms of depression, but also other common disorders, such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress, tinnitus, schizophrenia, autism, and addictions.

Currently, the only FDA-approved use is for recurrent major depression, anxious depression, OCD, and adolescent depression. TMS has given thousands of people new hope every day.

In Sarasota, TMS Therapy may be the right treatment option for a person who experiences MDD, OCD, or MDD with anxious depression—yet they have not achieved success with traditional medications for these conditions. Many TMS therapy patients have not found success with medication, switched medications, or experienced side effects from their medications that prohibit them from achieving relief. Often, a patient who approaches a clinician offering TMS is seeking an alternative treatment that is not medicinal. Our Clinicians perform TMS treatments in-office. One session of treatment runs 20 minutes, after which a patient can return to their regular daily routine. Many patients who were previously unsuccessful with traditional medication were able to find lasting relief through TMS therapy.
Cohen and Associates is a leading provider of Accelerated TMS, administered in multiple sessions per day, over five days. Most patients start to see results within 3-5 days of starting treatment, if not shortly after the last day of treatment. The standard rTMS protocol includes 30-36 daily sessions. For optimal results, the recommended course of treatment is six weeks; however, many patients see results in as little as two or three to four weeks. Results typically include: – Fewer depression days – An improvement in one’s mood – A greater desire to engage with people A provider offering TMS Therapy in Sarasota would be happy to answer any questions about insurance coverage. TMS may be a good option for a patient who: – Has had depression interfere with their life – Is not satisfied with the results from depression medications – Wishes to explore a non-drug, non-surgical treatment option – Has switched medications for depression or OCD due to side effects or lack of results – Has major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or major depressive disorder with anxious depression If you or someone you love in Sarasota County experiences any or all of these issues, you may find TMS Therapy a good fit for their needs.
Cohen & Associates’ state-of-the-art, precision TMS treatments are pain-free. Some patients identify a tapping sensation during treatment. It is a safe, non-invasive alternative to antidepressants. Unlike drugs and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which often cause more problems, TMS therapy offers a pathway to healing without pain or negative side effects.
TMS is free from the side effects often associated with antidepressant medication, including nervousness, weight gain, upset stomach, sexual problems, sleepiness, and memory loss. The most common side effect of TMS is mild pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site, which typically resolves after the first week of treatment.
